Armistead Maupin Insists that Michael Tolliver Lives isn't a continuation of his wonderful Tales of The City series, but - collective sigh of relief - that is exactly what the book turns out to be.
Michael Tolliver, the world's favourite gay everyman is now in his mid fifties and has been living on anti-viral meds for nigh on twenty years. We discover him happily married to a much younger (and sexy) chap - Ben - and, as Edmund White said of his own life, enjoying far more sex than most youngsters would ever think possible.
As the story unfolds, Tolliver revisits nearly all of the old residents of Barbary Lane, providing us with intriguing glimpses into how all those other lives have panned out.
Maupin chose first person narrative for this episode, and this, with an ever-present awareness of our aging hero's mortality gives Michael Tolliver Lives a more intimate aspect and a certain melancholy magnificence.
The result - a funny, sexy, and yet moving read - can only be described as essential for anyone who loved Tales Of The City. And that's just about everyone I know. - Nick Alexander.
