Gordon Brown, tipped to replace Tony Blair as premier, was this week trying to reassure critics of his capabilities to lead the country.
Many within the Labour party are claiming that the only proper way to select a new leader is to have a democratic vote, but Brown is adamant – he is the only man for the job.
“Tony Blair has been a brilliant leader,” he told UK newspaper, The Sun, “And I fully intend to carry on the Blair New Labour Legacy.”
“There is only one person who can carry on where Tony has left off, and that is me. The people calling for a leadership competition need to think about the kind of Labour party they want…” he said. “Do they want a weak, wishy washy pseudo democratic bunch of namby pambys or a smooth transition to a fresh bold era of dictatorship?”
“Tony never worried about votes, and neither will I… Was there a vote before we went into Iraq? No. Was there a vote when we went into Afghanistan? No. Do I need anyone anywhere in the world to vote for me in order to become prime minister? No.”
