New era for British rail as 40 miles of high-speed track is opened

The British government yesterday as Britain’s announced a new era for British Rail as the government inaugurated 40 miles of high-speed railway.

The French built Eurostar train linking the UK with France and Belgium, has already shattered the previous UK speed record of 259 km/h by reaching up to 330 km/h on test runs on 40 miles of French-built track between the channel tunnel and Gravesend.

Announcing today’s public opening of the line the UK transport minister told BIGfib: “Though we are still lagging a little behind the French speed record of 513 km/h we’re certainly catching up.”
“Today’s opening confirms Britain’s return to the forefront of rail technology and this is only the start.”
He continued: “As of today we already have 0.18% of Britain’s 21,000 miles of track up to French TGV standards. In 2007 when we open the next 30 mile stretch that will represent an amazing 0.29% of high-speed track integrated into our modern railway system.
