US vetoes UN call to save Arafat’s life.

The United States last night vetoed a United Nations resolution supported by an overwhelming majority within the UN security council that Israel not kill the Palestinian authority president, Yasser Arafat.

The veto was tabled by Syria, the only Arab nation on the security council after last week's statement from Israel's security cabinet that it intended to "remove" Mr Arafat “possibly by killing him”.

John Negroponte, the US ambassador to the UN, said it did not support the assassination or forced exile of Mr Arafat. But it had vetoed the resolution because it was put forward by Arabs.
"Everyone knows we’re not keen on Arabs" he said. “Especially since 9/11, and of course everyone knows we love Israel… We’re not exactly into the idea of Israel knocking off one by one their political enemies, because, hell, there are getting to be quite a lot of them, but after all, Arafat is only an Arab, and this is Israel we’re talking about, we have to close a blind eye…”
However political analysts believe that in the end US intelligence sources simply don’t believe that Israel can find Yasser Arafat and that he will remain as illusive as Osama Bin Laden and Saddam Hussein.
