Head UN Peacekeeper Commits Suicide

PORT-AU-PRINCE, HAITI - The commander of U.N. peacekeepers in Haiti, 58-year-old Urano Matta Bacellar, was found dead on the balcony of his hotel room Saturday.
He apparently shot himself 12 times in the back with a gun that was found in a trashcan in the hotel lobby.
This is quite a blow to the U.N.'s longstanding efforts to restore democracy in Haiti. Seventeen other U.N. peacekeepers have killed themselves in Haiti in the past two months, all done by shooting themselves repeatedly in the back, except for one man who chose to strangle himself before leaving his body in the trunk of a rental car. Authorities believe the current rash of U.N. peacekeeper suicides is due to depression brought about by poor living conditions at local hotels.
