After Police Woman's Death, Brits Demand US Style Everything
By Lolo Laroche
In the wake of the fatal shooting of a female officer in Bradford England, a renewed bout of letters and phone-calls are inundating the nation's newspapers and phone-ins calling for the UK police to be armed, for the death penalty to be restored, and for private citizens to be able to carry arms.
"safer"
Commenting on the fact that about three police officers in the UK are shot each year (against the USA's 150 - 200 yearly) Mary Nobrayne of Northrop told BBC's "Talking point" program, "I think they should all be armed like what they are in America. I think the police there feel safer even if, as you say, they actually aren't, if you know what I mean."
It's a view to be heard on any radio station throughout the nation.
"I used to live in Alabama," Stephen Donthink writes in the Birmingham Post. "and though the Murder rate with firearms in the UK is a mere 0.4 deaths per 100,000 against 134 per 100,00 in the USA I personally feel much safer when I'm over there knowing that everyone I see is probably packing a '45".
"death penalty"
"A policewoman dying like this is a disgrace," Peter Ijiot writes in The Sun letters page. "and I can almost remember when the last one was killed in 1989. It's time the government listens to the people, and the people want guns for all and the death penalty for everyone else."
