Gays "Worse than animals" - Archbishop.
Following hot on the heals of the appointment and resignation of Britains first openly gay bishop comes the election of an openly gay bishop in New Hampshire USA. The issue is now threatening to crack into two the worldwide Anglican Communion, a global association of churches in 164 countries.
In a letter released yesterday, 24 conservative US bishops warned that they would join fundamentalist leaders in Africa, Asia and South America and break ties with the Episcopal Church USA if it votes to confirm New Hampshire's chosen gay bishop, V. Gene Robinson.
While opponents to the appointment are a minority in the United States, they are a majority where the Anglican church is growing fastest, in Africa.
Peter Akinola, Archbishop of Nigeria the worlds biggest Anglican church has declared open war on the issue.
'I cannot think of how a man in his senses would be having a sexual relationship with another man. He declared. Even in the world of animals - dogs, cows, lions - we don't hear of such things.
He went on to say that should the church split general policy will be completely redefined based on the natural rules of the animal kingdom.
Thus eating from plates, the wearing of clothes, marriage, contraception, the washing of hair, use of toilets and toilet paper, driving of cars, shopping, living in houses, prayer and belief in God will all be ruled Unnatural.
Its gonna be back to basics. Akinola declared. Well all be much better off behaving as God wanted us to, like dogs and cows.
