Chirac and Shroeder React To EU Poll Defeat
By Lolo Laroche
French president Jacques Chirac and Germany's Gerard Schroeder, were yesterday drawing the necessary conclusions from their stinging poll defeats.
"The French have spoken today," Chirac told journalists from France's TF1, "And the message from the 60 percent of the population who have rejected the EU consitution is clear. The UK Budget rebate must go." Asked why he thought the French people so clearly rejected his government's advice, Chirac explained, "The UK must give more money to the EU; they already pay twice as much as France, but we think they should pay more. The unfair budget rebate they receive must go."
The EU consitutional poll is the fourth electoral defeat in a row for the Chirac government.
Bigfib's Lolo Laroche asked him whether his position as president was now untenable and whether he would now resign.
"Yes, the UK budget rebate is untenable," Chirac replied. "All French citizens should be thinking about it a lot and feeling very angry."
Asked whether rejection of the incomprehensible constitution had been a foregone conclusion, Chirac told Lolo, "Yes, the rejection of the constitution in incomprehensible, as is the UK Budget rebate."
Laroche pointed out that it had perhaps been stupid to expect the people to take such a major reform on trust, especially seeing as Chirac and his government are so untrusted.
Chirac replied, "Yes, you are quite right, the British cannot be trusted." Chancellor Schroeder of Germany, who also was slammed in regional elections last week, reacted to his own unpopularity by having a beer with Chirac.
Asked what the French-German alliance can now do to advance the common cause of a united Europe, Shroeder replied, "UK budget rebate, UK budget rebate, UK budget rebate."
