McDonalds CEO Dies As Big Mad Unveiled
By Alan Lord.
NEW YORK, January 17 Charlie Bell, the former Chairman and CEO of McDonald's Corporation, died of cancer on Sunday. He did not live to see the unveiling of McDonalds new Big Mad sandwich, launched in honor of the third case of MCD (Mad Cow Disease) reported this year by Canadian beef producers.
Although Charlie Bell was diagnosed with colorectal cancer in May last year within weeks of his being promoted to the top position at McDonald's, company officials denied his death was in any way either job-related or diet-related.
Charlie Bell had spent his entire career at McDonald's, starting to eat the popular Big Mac burger at the age of 15 as a part-time crew member. Bell became the President and Chief Operating Officer in 2002, before succeeding Jim Cantalupo as the CEO of the company, who died of a heart attack in April 2004.
"Too bad these guys are dead," said McDonald's chairman Andrew McKenna, "they would have loved the new Big Mad... in fact, they would probably have loved three or four of em."
