"No risk from GM crops." - UK minister Elliot Morley

The sacked environment minister, Michael Meacher, accused the government of downplaying evidence that genetically modified crops could present a health hazard and of refusing to hold a debate.

In an article in the Independent, he says that most of the tests carried out on GM crops were "scientifically vacuous" and notes that government-sponsored research that proved negative was "widely rubbished". He also claims that when the only human GM trial found GM DNA in bacteria in the gut "instead of this finding being regarded as a serious discovery, which should be checked and rechecked, the spin was that this was nothing new and did not involve any health risk".

The new UK environment minister, Elliot Morley, however today denied the charges.
"Firstly there is no risk." Morley told journalists. "And we have not allowed GM crops... We have allowed a few isolated test sites throughout the UK, precisely so that we can assess the safety of GM foods. Meacher knows this, he dealt with the authorisations...”
"It is equally untrue that there has been no human testing.” Morley continued. “In the areas wher Meacher have authorised GM production, and in the areas where the products thereof have been fed into the food chain, no-one has even noticed… We've all been eating GM food without even realising it and if the nightmare scenario of people growing extra ears or whatever was going to happen it would have happened already."

BIGfib can today reveal the Isolated test sites in the UK where the government has permitted GM crops to be grown since 1999.
