France. SCPP defends itself against evil file sharers
France: Criminal complaints and civil court cases were filed this week against 50 major downloaders of music in France, as the first legal actions in an ongoing campaign to combat illegal file sharing. French anti-piracy organization SCPP is pursuing court proceedings that allow fines and other criminal sanctions, or civil remedies including termination of the internet account of an infringer.
The first high profile cases attack an unemployed man, a nurse and a garage mechanic, showing, SCPP says, that no one can escape.
These three people have together downloaded more than 30,000 songs
SCPP spokesman Steven Tealer told BIGfib.
Take Bernard Offe alone
He downloaded over 12,000 songs last year. This is a huge loss of revenue to the recording industry.
B.Offe is a typical file sharer. He lives in a bedsit on his RMI unemployment allocations of 400 Euros (about 500 USD) a month and spends his time surfing the net and downloading music.
The SCPP claims that had he not downloaded the songs he would in fact have bought over a thousand CDs.
Without illegal downloading Stephane Boffe would have bought over 15,000 Euros worth of CDs last year alone. S. Tealer told BIGfib. The recording industry intends to get that money back.
