French Maire suspended for gay marriage

The French government yesterday announced the suspension of the maire for Begles, Noel Mamere (Green party), as a result of his marriage of two gay men.

The sanction by the government, which has declared the marriage illegal is rarely used, in fact in the past only two reasons have ever brought about such intervention by the central government.
In recent years France’s Maires have been suspended after financial scandals when they were caught stealing from the public purse. However there is a precedent; there was another time when Maires were also suspended for not agreeing with central government; during the second world war.
From 1939 to 1945 the puppet governement set up by the invading Nazis also suspended any Maire who didn’t do exactly what the central government required.
