Tories try to reduce EC wastage by voting themselves a 30,000 Euro package.

Tory MEPs took their battle against the EC’s spendthrift ways last week by for voting in favour of giving ex-members of the European parliament subsidised private health insurance.

Richard Balfe, the veteran conservative MEP for London, sought to amend a motion on the parliament's budget to provide for a "contributor-based health scheme for former members" enabling retired MEPs to claim up to €30,000 a year for private medical insurance coverage.

“People understand finance on a personal level, but they shouldn’t pretend to understand the complexities of EC finance…” Balfe told BIGfib. “Think of it in terms of a store-card… The more you spend the more you save…, well in this particular case, the more you spend the more we save, or would have saved…”
“Anyway, whatever they give us, well at least it won’t be wasted on worthless bureaucracts…”

Unfortunately the motion was defeated by a massive vote by the majority including the “spendthrift” Labour members.
