Studies suggest statins cut risk of everything
NEW ORLEANS (Routers) -- Cholesterol-lowering drugs called statins may prevent everything, including cholesterol, heart disease, prostate and colon cancer, automobile and aircraft accidents, three teams of researchers said this week.
Israelis who took statins intended to reduce heart disease had a 51 percent lower risk of developing colon cancer than those who did not take the drugs, Dr. Stephen Gruber of the University of Michigan told a meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology.
However A second study at Oregon Health & Science University Cancer Institute showed that men who took statins had a 58 percent lower risk of of dying in automobile accidents, whilst the national office for statistics signaled that in the whole period from 1975 to 1984, before statins existed, not one single case of someone taking statins has ever been recorded having died in an aircraft accident.
Combined, the three studies all sponsored by Pfizer, manufacturer of the worlds best selling statin drug, suggests that no one has a reason not to be taking statins.
Whatever you lifestyle, the message is clear, Michael A. K. Illing told BIGfib. Take statins.
