Bush denies double standards on prison conditions
President Bush yesterday refuted opposition claims that the US runs two sets of prison standards, one for Arabs in Iraq and another in the US.
The US is the worlds most democratic and civilized force for peace. President Bush told CNN.
Our nation is built on the concepts of fairness and democracy and the prison system weve been operating in Iraq is run on exactly the same model as those in the US
Claims otherwise are just not true.
The President went on to point out that physical and sexual abuse of prisoners, takes place regularly in American prisons and provided press cuttings to journalists as proof.
Examples shown included Pennsylvania where inmates are routinely stripped in front of other inmates, in Arizona where male inmates at the Maricopa County jail are made to wear women's underwear as a form of humiliation and at Virginia's Wallens Ridge maximum security prison, where new inmates are forced to wear black hoods and are beaten and made to crawl.
Finally the President proudly handed press cuttings showing that during his own time as Governor of Texas, the Judge William Wayne was forced to impose a federal consent decree on the states prisons after finding that guards were allowing inmate gang leaders to buy and sell other inmates as slaves for sex.
