British EU demands reduced to 2 minor treaty changes
Tony Blair and Gordon Brown will this week announce that British reserves about the new EU constitution, the "red lines" that they say cannot be overstepped, have been reduced from 25 points to only 2.
The diplomatic breakthrough is thought to have been thrashed out during Mr Blair’s visit to Paris this week.
Previously concerns included taxation, interest rates, agricultural policy, policing, and defence, however following talks with the French President Chirac as well as the French opposition leader Francois Holland, a compromise has been negotiated.
The new formula involves two simple modifications of the proposed EU constitution to remove the words “EU” and “Constitution”.
The formula is thought by analysts to be acceptable to the British people as-is and without referendum.
