US: Tax credits for the poor. "Ain't gonna happen" - Delay.
Washington June 10.
A powerful republican leader in the house today dismissed pressure from the White House to pass a senate bill providing tax credits for 6.5 million low-income working people.
"Ain't gonna happen" Mr DeLay said this afternoon. "It's about time people got clear on Republican tax policy..."
Delay went on to explain that the tax credits would only be passed as part of a much larger $82 billion package of tax cuts for middle and high-income earners.
"We ain't into helping the poor and we is into helping the rich...."
"We don't mind throwing a few tax credits to the poor as long as those who are much less needy are getting much more..." Delay explained. "But this whole tax thing is not about helping people who can't buy shoes for the kids, and it's not about getting the US economy back on the road by stimulating demand for domestic products... What it is about is letting J. Moneyblower Senior get that new yacht he's been dribbling over without having to dig into his savings, and it is about letting Tom and Trudy Dickinson in Utah buy a brand new Japanese home cinema system... People need to get clear in their minds what we really are defending here."
