Defiant US says Falluja dead were pre-rebels
600 dead in besieged Iraqi city - but marines claim victims deserved it.
The United States last night robustly defended its controversial siege of Falluja which has cost the lives of more than 600 people including large numbers of old people, women and children.
Commenting on the fact that the director of the town's general hospital, Rafie al-Issawi, said the vast majority of the dead were women, children and the elderly, US marine Lieutenant Colonel Brennan Byrne said: "You cant underestimate those Iraqis. Some of those grannies have machine guns under their hajib, and the kids, yeah, they look so innocent, but theyre just pre-rebels, we needed to deal with them before they became a problem, prevention is better than a cure and all that.
He also denied that the marines have been randomly shooting into crowds.
The marines are trained to be precise in their firepower ... The fact that there are 600 dead goes back to the fact that the marines are very good at what they do," he said. And if the dead are grannies and kiddies, then that means the marines were aiming for grannies and kiddies.
