UK defence ministry says "no-cloud" helicopters not a problem
A parliamentary committee on Wednesday criticized the government for buying eight helicopters which the RAF cannot use in cloudy weather.
The Ministry of Defence would need to spend another $232 million to put the $474 million Boeing helicopters into service, said the report.
The chairman of the House of Commons Public Accounts Committee, Edward Leigh, said the Chinook contract was "one of the most incompetent procurements of all time. ... Thanks to a massively botched job, they cannot be flown when there is a cloud in the sky."
However, Lord Bach, the minister for defence procurement, said that by a stroke of luck the cloud limitation would not be a problem.
Certainly helicopters which can only fly above 500 feet in cloudless skies leave a lot to be desired, especially in a country like Britain." he told BIGfib, But Ive checked out the timetable for the next year or so and all the wars are going to be in hot places like Iraq, Iran, Syria, so in fact our Chinooks should be perfect.
