Leaked Windows code “Full of Junk” say Hackers
(CMN) -- Eager to get their hands on Microsoft's secrets, a frenzy of Internet file sharing followed the leak of source code for the popular Windows NT and Windows 2000 software.
The chunks of code -- riddled with hidden bugs and slow junk code-- were posted on numerous file-sharing networks Friday. Message boards buzzed with commentary such as “This can’t be Microsoft, it’s full of shit.” and "I'm so glad I have a Mac."
It still was unclear how the security breach would impact millions of computers using the world's largest software maker's products. Microsoft quickly said there were no reports of the breach affecting customers as FBI agents tried to track down suspects.
But security expert Peter Doh said the junk and erroneous code -- by some estimates, about 15 percent of the total could actually help Microsoft.
“If this turns out to be the real source code for Windows, the Hackers may actually find it more interesting fixing all the bad programming floating around instead of trying to break it. I think we might see a new generation of virus actually making windows work better.
Computer experts at Symantec corp stated in a press release yesterday that it was unlikely that the leaked code was actually part of Windows.
Director Victor Irus told BIGfib : “According to our in house experts bits of this code look like the work of a five year old… You have a mixture of good code and junk that doesn't make sense," he said. "It looks like someone was playing around with it. There’s no way this could be stuff from Microsoft.”
Microsoft however refuted the claim by issuing a warning on their corporate website stating “That anyone found to be passing on extracts from the Windows source code, even the crappy bits, will have legal proceedings brought against them.”
