Chirac says France needs a thief and a liar.

On Monday, French president Chirac stood firmly behind Alain Juppé his ex aide who a three-judge court have judged guilty of illegal party funding.

The charges stem from shady employment practices during Chirac’s reign in Paris' city hall which illegally placed members of his party into city hall jobs and enabled Juppé and Chirac to “take illegal benefits”. Essentially they lied and cheated in order to steal from the public purse.

Chirac who himself has avoided prosecution solely due to his presidential position said that Juppé, the now convicted thief and liar “is a politician of exceptional quality, of competence, of humanism, of honesty. France needs men of this quality.”
“So he’s a liar, so he’s a thief. But aren’t we all ?” Chirac told France’s TF1 station, before launching a government inquiry into the judges “disgraceful” decision to prosecute his friend.
