France rules that all pupils must grow half-beards
The ministerial committee convened by the F rench government to resolve the issue of whether students should be able to wear Islamic headscarves in schools has today published a series of recommendations.
In an effort to remove all symbols of religious affiliation from schools, in line with the French constitutions requirement that the state remain scrupulously secular, the committee has ruled that indeed headscarves should be banned.
They have gone further though by insisting that Jewish skullcaps, Christian crosses, full beards and bandanas must be outlawed too.
In the concluding paragraph the committee points out that as a clean shaven chin can also be seen as a sign of antagonism to Islam all male students should be encouraged to grow wispy half-beards.
