France goes it alone on nuclear power

France, which already produces more of its electricity in nuclear plants than any other country in the world and which is the worlds biggest producer of nuclear waste, this week announced that it intends to build a new generation of nuclear power station proving once again the "exception Francaise".

France, swimming against an international tide which has seen the UK, Belgium, Germany, Sweden, Denmark and Italy decide to do away with their existing nuclear plants because of environmental and economic reasons, has clearly opted to stay on the Nuclear route.
Commenting France's decision to have at least another fifty years of nuclear power, French Industry Minister Nicole Fontaine said on Wednesday

"France cannot do without nuclear energy, particularly France's nuclear lobby can't do without it."
Brushing aside environmental concerns about the millions of liters of radioactive waste that the French nuclear industry pumps into the sea every year, the thousands of cubic metres of highly radioactive waste already produced which France is unable to dispose of and which is stocked in vast swimming-pool sized basins which will remain toxic for thousands of years, or the risks of a nuclear accident such as the one which killed thousands in Chernobyl, Fontaine told BIGfib that this is not a problem.

"There is no pollution, and there is no environmental impact... There was not even any environmental impact from the nuclear bombs we tested in the Pacific, and even ze Chernobyl cloud polluted every country in Europe except France... It flew right around France... That's proof if nothing else is, that Nuclear power poses no threat to the citizens of France."

"The existing power stations already provide zero risk and the new generation we are building is designed to be 100 times even more less risky."
"It's easy for vast sun-soaked Britain to choose renewable energy sources, but look at the reality. Renewable energies are not an option for France, everyone knows that we have no space in France, no wind, no coastline and no sunshine either."
