PARIS - Government will not cave in to minority demands... - J.P.Raffarin.
Jean-Pierre Raffarin, Frances embattled prime minister said defiantly that his government would not capitulate to minority union demands no matter what.
If we changed our minds every time a minority group decided to strike we would never get anywhere.... Raffarin told jounalists.
Commenting on opinion polls he added You cannot govern by opinion polls... We have made our decision and opinion polls and minority strikes will not change anything.
Opinion polls show a mere 70% of the French population in favour of the strikes and yesterdays strikes across the country mobilised little more than a million workers.
New protest action has so far been announced by School and University teachers, tax-office officials, hospital workers, main-line (SNCF) train drivers, unemployment office workers, street-cleaners, dustmen, metropolitan train drivers in Paris, Marseille, Lyon and Toulouse, farmers, air-traffic controlers and telecom and postal workers.
The government is here to execute the wish of the people, and in the name of the people it will win... declared Raffarin.
